Yousef Karsh was discovered by Canadian
Prime Minister Mackenzie King who arranged introductions with visiting
dignitaries for portrait sittings. His work then attracted the attention of
varied celebrities and he ended up shooting the famous portrait of Winston Churchill.
I like how bold Karsh’s work is, the black and white gives a different feel to
the previous colour portraits. It sets you back from the subject but the
contrast unveils an intimate look into someone you were never normally get the
chance to see close up.
